Edition 284 Tuesday June 2nd 2015
Hi,I
love it when a plan comes together especially when it involves slowing down a
bit and taking some time out. The plan was to take the Friday off before every
long weekend this year and this Queens Birthday weekend I seemed to need it
bigtime.I did think for one stupid moment I might be ‘too busy’ to take it but
I am glad that sanity prevailed.I had the coolest time with my family after a
hectic month or two where I have unfortunately let work dominate preceedings!!
We
did all our favourite stuff enjoying some amazing weather and some simple self
made fun!
BTW
I have never known anything in my lifetime other than ‘Queens’ birthday in
June? I guess it will need to be called ‘Kings’ birthday some time soon and
when this eventuates will it be at a different time of year?Oh the things one
thinks about when swimming endless laps of the pool!!The way QE 2 is going we
shouldn’t have to worry too much too soon!
Fletcher says; riding his bike
through puddles with his ‘go fast’ shoes on is far better than piano lessons
any day(see attached). Also looking forward to the move from Daycare to
Kindergarten soon but had to tell Dad that looking at flats in Dunedin may be a
little premature!!
I
had to grin last week when I saw a Policeman booking someone driving an
Auckland Transport sign written car. As you know I have had issues with and
detest both but particularly the Auckland Transport officers who patrol the
streets of Auckland preying on motorist ratepayers. In a City devoid of
adequate, reasonably priced parking options I had no sympathy for him……..boo hoo
pay up pal!!
Life
at 48 continues after plenty of ZZZzzzzzzz stacking and pesky mice stalking!! As
we stare down the half way mark to 2015,I look forward to a better work life
balance after reassessing priorities and realising (yet again) there is none
more important than…FAMILY.…..Cheers Jonesey!
Harry and the Hendersons reckon
even a Monkey would know that family comes first!!

After talking last week
about the importance of accepting every opportunity for growth that comes your
way….one did!
I was lucky enough to be
invited to share some insights into ‘Leadership’ from my career journey with a
group of consultants, associates and partners from an international PR company!
I could easily have
declined because I was ‘too busy’ however it was another perfect opportunity
for me to practise what I preach and above all else benefit personally from the
experience.
I benefitted greatly
through having to plan a presentation that included highlights and lowlights of
my leadership experiences from both leading and being led.
It was a good exercise
for me to reflect on what had shaped my career and how I have been able to use
that experience to mentor and motivate others to be better Managers and
Leaders.
I also benefitted from
tailoring my presentation to fit and reinforce the core values of their company.
They have four key values
the first word of each form the acronym U.R.G.E which is pretty cool.
U for being United as a team, no weak links all
committed to the agreed and common cause!
R for being Restless and never complacent, always
challenging boundaries and mediocrity!
G for being grounded and humble,’no dickheads’ or
‘rock stars’,all appreciative of each other!
E for being ‘energised’ and ‘Upbeat’ and going that
extra bit harder and further for the team!
I had fun being part of
the Senate SHJ Academy Day sharing whilst also realising I had learned quite a
bit along the way I could use to ‘urge’ others.I was inspired and
motivated to do more………soon!!!
